When you pick up a semi-automatic pistol, always do two things right away. We’re assuming you’ve already mastered Rule 1: Keep Your Finger off the Trigger Until Ready to Fire! First, while pointing the pistol in a safe direction, open the slide and check the magazine to make sure there are no cartridges loaded in the magazine. Second, and even more importantly, check the chamber to make sure there is not a cartridge in there. Now, even though you’ve verified that the gun is empty, treat it like it’s loaded! Remember Rule 1?

Modern guns are designed with layers of safety features. One of the features that engineers include is prevention of discharge from unexpected impact. This is a fancy way of saying that most modern guns will NOT go off if you drop them and they hit the floor. In fact, you’re far more likely to inadvertently press the trigger trying to catch a dropped gun. So, as hard and unnatural as it seems, if you lose control of your gun, let it fall. Any potential scratches or dings are far better than possible consequences of a negligent discharge.

The bottom line is that a carelessly handled gun can cause you to do life-altering and very permanent damage. Be careful out there folks!
